The group provides what a single office would struggle to organise on its own: specialists, digital tools, training and knowledge sharing.

Our mission: advice, closer to you.

  • 2019: Filip Balcaen and Baltisse join the group to support its growth.

  • 2021: the group continues as PIA Group.

  • 2022: first step across the border with PIA Nederland.

  • 2024: specialist expertise is brought together in PIA Advisory. Acquisition of the accounting software Cashaca.

  • 2026: PIA Group continues to grow in Germany. Tom Verhaegen becomes Group CEO.

Frequently asked questions

Choosing a bookkeeper or accountant

  • What does accountancy cover?

Accountancy covers bookkeeping, preparing financial reports and annual accounts, identifying financial risks and advising on tax, law and investments. An accountant also keeps you informed of new legislation that affects your business.

  • When do you need an accountant?

When you need financial expertise to grow or to meet all your tax and legal obligations. An accountant takes administration off your hands, giving you more time for your core business.

  • Does every business need an accountant?

It is not mandatory for every business, but it is valuable for every business, including sole traders and single-member companies. An accountant ensures financial stability, correct returns and opportunities for growth.

  • What is the difference between a bookkeeper and an accountant?

A bookkeeper mainly records financial data and transactions. An accountant also analyses the figures, gives tax advice and develops financial strategies. The terms are often used interchangeably, but the title of accountant is reserved for those recognised by the ITAA (Institute for Tax Advisors and Accountants).

  • How much does a bookkeeper or accountant cost at PIA Group?

We deliberately do not put a fixed price on it. Every file is different: the type of business, the number of transactions, the sector and your advisory needs determine the price. After a no-obligation introductory meeting, you receive a proposal tailored to your situation.

Beware of the cheapest option: late or incorrect returns can lead to fines of thousands of euros. Good, proactive advice, such as switching to a company at the right time, often delivers more than it costs in the long run.

  • Is PIA Group a large firm or a local firm?

Both. You work with a local office that knows you and your business personally. That office is part of a group with more than 85 offices in Belgium and Luxembourg and 2,400 employees. This gives you access to specialists, audit and digital tools whenever you need them.

  • Will I have a permanent contact person?

Yes. Your local office remains your point of contact, even when specialists from PIA Advisory or the international HLB network are involved in your file.

  • How do I switch to PIA Group?

Contact an office near you for a no-obligation meeting. We then get in touch with your current accountant and arrange the transfer of your file.

  • Does PIA Group work digitally?

Yes. We work with digital accounting software and apps, so you can easily send in invoices and receipts and keep track of your figures. For sole traders, there is PIA Go!, with its own app and dashboard.

  • Does PIA Group also work in French or English?

Yes. We have offices in Flanders, Brussels and Wallonia and support clients in Dutch, French and English.

Frequently asked questions

Starting out as an entrepreneur

  • Should I start as a sole trader or set up a company?

That depends on your expected profit, your risks, your personal situation and your plans. With higher profits, a company is often more tax-efficient, but it also comes with more obligations. In a no-obligation introductory meeting, we set out the pros and cons for your situation.

  • Is my business plan financially viable?

Our experts carry out a feasibility analysis of your plan and show you where adjustments may be needed.

  • When will I break even and how much working capital do I need?

Together, we draw up a detailed financial plan. If you already have one, we give you advice on it.

  • Should I borrow or raise capital?

We explain all forms of financing, from bank loans to equity and private equity, and advise you on which suits your situation best.

  • What administrative steps do I need to take to get started?

These include opening a business current account, registering with the Crossroads Bank for Enterprises, joining a social insurance fund, registering with the VAT authorities and applying for any permits you need. For a company, you will also need articles of association drawn up by a notary and a financial plan. We guide you through every step.

  • What is PIA Go!?

PIA Go! is digital accounting with a personal accountant for sole traders, including self-employed students. You upload invoices and receipts via the app. In the Comfort and ComfortMax plans, the accountant handles the bookkeeping, VAT returns and personal income tax, including an annual review meeting. In the Relax plan, you do the bookkeeping yourself and an accountant keeps an eye on it. More info at piago.be.

Frequently asked questions

VAT, Peppol and tax

  • Do I have to send my invoices via Peppol?

Yes. Since 1 January 2026, Belgian VAT-registered businesses must send and receive invoices to and from other businesses electronically via Peppol. PIA Group helps you choose the right software and make the switch.

  • I am a doctor or healthcare provider. Do I have to charge VAT?

Medical services are only exempt from VAT if they have a therapeutic purpose. For other services, you do have to charge VAT. With the Btw Medic Scan, we identify which of your services are subject to VAT.

  • When do I need VAT advice?

When starting your business, when investing in vehicles or real estate, when selling abroad or online, and when, as a liberal profession, you are no longer exempt from VAT.

Frequently asked questions

Audit, financial management and valuation

  • Is an audit mandatory for my business?

Large companies must have their annual accounts audited. For SMEs, it is not mandatory, but a regular, independent audit helps detect errors, ensure compliance and build trust with banks, investors and buyers.

  • Do I need a CFO, and do they have to be full-time?

Not necessarily. With CFO-as-a-service, you get an experienced CFO or controller for a few hours or days a month. This lets you steer your business on figures rather than gut feeling, gives you insight into your margins and cash flow, and means you spend less time on Excel reports.

  • Do I need to have my business valued for the capital gains tax?

It is not mandatory, but it is often advantageous. Without your own valuation, the statutory standard formula (4 x EBITDA + equity) applies, which often works out less favourably. An independent valuation with a reference date of 31 December 2025 can still be carried out until 31 December 2027.

  • Can I have a valuation done if I am not a client?

Yes. PIA Group also carries out valuations for non-clients, by an independent accountant within the group.

Frequently asked questions

Growth, acquisition and succession

  • Can PIA Group help me sell or acquire a business?

Yes. We support the entire process: valuation, due diligence, negotiation, financing and legal completion. Learn more.

  • How do I pass my business on to my children?

A family business transfer requires a legal, tax and financial plan. Together, we look at the best timing, the structure and the implications for gift and inheritance tax.
