Female accountant? Follow your path and capitalise on your strengths!
In the accountancy and advisory sector, leadership is often traditionally associated with men. Yet for Nathalie Calle, the female CEO of PIA Group, taking the lead comes naturally. Her journey to the top is impressive not only because of the responsibilities she carries, but also because of her vision on leadership and the way she inspires others. We spoke to her about that vision and the role of women in the business world.
More than numbers: the accountant as co-pilot
Nathalie was inspired early on by Roger Van Opstal, who helped her see that an accountant is more than someone who manages numbers. “As an accountant, you’re an entrepreneur’s partner in crime — a co-pilot who helps steer and support their journey.”
This vision, centered on collaboration and growth, still gives her energy every day and forms the foundation of her leadership at PIA Group.
Leadership starts with yourself
For Nathalie, good leadership isn’t about authority — it’s about collaboration and authenticity. “The power of working together is crucial. As a CEO, your role is to support and guide. Leadership rooted in our core values — ambition, entrepreneurship, and respect — is essential, because those values shape our culture. At the same time, you also need to have the courage to make decisions when it matters.”
She also strongly believes in staying true to your own values. “Authenticity is a must. At PIA Group, we live by the principle: ‘Don’t fix what isn’t broken.’ It reflects the local DNA of our 60+ offices. It helps us remain strong in who we are.”
Talent knows no gender
“I’ve always had the space to be myself — not just as a woman, but as a professional. I rarely felt that gender was an obstacle. At PIA Group, it’s not about being male or female, but about who you are and what you bring to the table.” Nathalie sees a positive shift in the Belgian and European markets and is confident that women will continue gaining impact in leadership roles.
“Of course, we still need to grow the role of women in companies,” she says. “But at PIA Group, we’re already taking concrete steps in that direction.” Diversity and inclusion aren’t future goals — they’re the current reality. Nathalie is proud of PIA Group’s diverse talent mix, where men and women are given equal opportunities.
Dare to grow and don’t be intimidated
To young women in the accountancy and advisory sector, Nathalie shares a clear message: “Follow your path, play to your strengths, and don’t be intimidated by challenges. Believe in your power and be proud of what you can achieve — no matter what others say.”
Her advice is simple: stay true to yourself, focus on your strengths, and never let anything stop you from reaching your goals.
Together, we make the difference
Nathalie emphasizes that the true strength of leadership lies in collaboration. “If you help people grow, the organization grows with them. It’s about creating a culture where everyone has the opportunity to excel.” Her mission is to build a workplace where every PIA team member plays a role in the group’s success — in their own unique way.
